Our New Life Philosophy

Warning: Some might think we're crazy after reading this post, because it speaks somewhat of our political views. Don't be offended! And please, don't tell me I'm crazy.

So, to start off, Rob and I have been watching Glenn Beck almost every night for the last month. Rob bought a subscription to his TV program, since it's all online and that's the only way to see him anymore. (I'm really glad, because now he's the one in charge and really says whatever he thinks. It's pretty funny sometimes.)

Anyway, I've decided that Glenn Beck's programs speak mainly about just two things.
1. Politics and 2. Being Prepared

His political shows are entertaining and enlightening, and I'm feeling stronger about politics than I ever have before. However, his preparedness shows are what has really caught both mine and Rob's attention lately. He really stresses the importance of being prepared for anything that might happen. Our economy is still headed downward, and he has a few solid tips to prepare for the worst. Now, what he suggests is the same thing that our church leaders have always recommended, however, we've not been so motivated to abide by them until now. Glenn manages to throw it on our face quite a bit more than our church leaders have. :)

A few of his pointers that we've really taken to heart are to get out of debt and have food storage.

So, this brings up our new plan. We are selling our Subaru. Remember the car that we just bought in September and absolutely love, yes, that one. We just don't need it. We both feel like that payment we're making every month could definitely be better used elsewhere to pay off other debts and build up savings.

It might take a little while to sell, because it's such a new car, but that's ok. Financially, we don't need to get rid of it, but Rob would rather sell it now while we can still afford it than down the road when we can't afford it if something were to happen. I've posted it on numerous classified pages, and I'm just hoping it sells soon so I don't have to worry about it any longer. :)

We've decided that for a while, we're just going to share the truck. We work super close to each other and ride together some days already, so we could easily do everyday. Plus, Rob has his motorcycle that he can ride once it warms up. So come Spring/Summer time, we'll have 2 vehicles again. Definitely by next winter I think we want to buy something else, but this time we're going to look for something a lot cheaper that we could have paid off in just a few months.

After we get our car sold, the next thing we are going to focus on is food storage. We're going to make this super easy on us, and buy pre made freeze dried meals. It's a little bit more expensive than buying pantry food that would last a year, but so much easier, and according to Glenn, they taste really good. :) We're going to use a company called Food Insurance, because they always have ads on Glenn Beck TV and it looks like a really good company. We'll start out small with just 3 months, and then build it up to where we have a years worth. The nice thing about this stuff is that it lasts for 25 years, so we only buy it once and it's good until we're 50 years old.

But first things first, we need to sell our car and pay off our other debts. We definitely won't be going into more debt just to buy food storage. I think that kind of defeats the purpose. :) I'll keep this posted with how things are going, but we've taken the first step and I'm really excited.

Oh, and last night we made 40 hour emergency candles for only $3 a piece! I'm pretty excited! Now if our power goes out, because last week over 4000 people in Idaho Falls didn't have power due to super strong winds, we'll be ready to go!

  1. We're selling our Shelf Reliance food rotation system if you're interested! One of the first things you need is a place for your food storage to go. We just don't have room in our little apartment for it. Here's the listing if you're interested: http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/for/2865199746.html

  2. Good for you guys! It's hard to make decisions like that (selling your car) but I agree that it was very wise. You're motivating me to start stocking up my own food storage too.

  3. There is a great article in the new March Ensign about a couple that sold her engagement ring to do the same thing. Next time you are down I would love you to help me make the candles.
